XKCD on the keynote

My favourite comic XKCD had a (as usual) cutting funny on the keynote: xkcd.com

KEyn..zzzzzzz…(nudge)….Eh? oh, KEYNOTE yay!

There comes a time in every Apple Keynote (about T minus 55 minutes normally) when you know if it is going to be disappointing. Tuesday 6th Jan 2009 5:55pm UK time was that time.

When there are only three things on the agenda and they have spent most of the first hour talking about iLife, they are clutching at straws to finish the full 90 minutes. I suppose it could have been worse, the three things could have been iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand and then good bye folks.

My (our) hopes of significant hardware releases are however burning dully in the corner of the room and I am left deflated.

Don’t get me wrong, the new tech in iPhoto and iMovie (but especially ‘faces’ in iPhoto) is nothing short of remarkable, I just – as always – want more.

I guess that is Apple’s marketing skill, their Barnum-esqe show is designed to bring the faithful to their knees salivating about what could have been and what could be if their deity ordains to listen to their emailed and blogged prayers.

Like all good divine entities there will be no response from Apple regarding requests from their flock, merely that if the truly faithful get their rewards they will think it is the answer to their prayers and if they don’t then they were not worthy anyway and need to flog themselves just that little bit harder to prove their piety.

Despite my jaded synacism, I am already aching to get my hands on iLife 09 and may even buy a copy - with real money!

I am sure that soon, the announcement of a Special Event at the Town Hall conference room in Apple HQ Cupertino will sing of MacMini’s and iMacs and other lovely gifts from our gadget gods for all us faithful to the cause.

I know this of course because I BELIEVE, the deity spoke to me see, a voice in my head. Don’t you hear it too? – No? well you just need to believe more that’s all. Where’s that crop?

So he IS ill, now can we move on?

Ok, Steve Jobs has released a note saying he is ill but not about to peg it.

Now, can we stop all the prying and speculation and get on with the technology please?

Steve, get well soon mate. (dude, I know you read this  :-)

Collaboratively, small efforts add up

I am going to confirm what many people have been telling me for some years – I need help.

I am therefore recruiting staff writers (unpaid of course - for the moment) for a new blog I am setting up in the next couple of months. The blog will be about technology generally, however it will not be platform specific or even any particular technology specific but just about anything cool in technology.

The sort of stuff I’d like are; interesting product releases (that’s INTERESTING stuff, not the latest USB memory stick shaped like a rabbit or other tat – unless it is a really funky rabbit of course), product or service reviews (honest ones – good or bad), tech tips, editorials etc. – hey we all read these type of sites, we all know what we as techies like and and (with a couple of exceptions) they all have shortcomings.

If enough of us occasionally contribute we should get a steady stream of posts to share with the group.

I hope to have some advertising on there to pay for bandwidth and search seeding and if it really takes off, we’ll talk about paying for content too.

If you are interested in having a voice on the net, want to be part of a bigger project and don’t want the hassle of running your own site, please comment below and I’ll be in touch.

MWSF2009 – the last??

Ah, it must be January, the Mac rumour mill is working overtime, Steve Jobs is (apparently) on his deathbed – again – and the industry press are getting their knickers in a twist over what will happen in the hour or so before a trade exhibition in San Francisco opens it’s doors to the public.

Personally, I am hoping for a change to the AppleTV unit so I can buy a model that isn’t two years old for my AV system.

Other rumoured products include: a Netbook laptop device, a overgrown iPod touch with a big screen, iWork in the cloud and a release date for Snow Leopard.

What ever happens, with Steve not delivering the Keynote and Apple pulling out altogether in 2010, it’s going to be an interesting event this year.

Vote below on what you think will be announced…

What product do you expect at MWSF2009?
