Because life is like that sometimes – next to implausible.

Well that sucks

I used to be an NTL subscriber in the days before sky plus but was lured to the dark side by the recording box of wonder and have used sky for a couple of years now.

With the take over of NTL and the UK cable co’s by Richard Branson’s Virgin, I have been seriously thinking about going back to cable. They have a good high end product now with HD and recording, plus video on demand etc. Combining TV, Internet and Phone services would give us a better service for the same outlay each month.

It would appear that Mr Murdoch is aware of the threat that Richard Branson presents and so Sky are feeling threatened enough to withdraw the Sky 1 and 2 service from Virgin. This (as Sky knows) removes a major reason for having the system – the jump it gives over terestrial TV for all those “have to see” American series like 24, Stargate, Lost etc.

The irony is that I was unaware of the development and had more or less persuaded wifey to swap when she heard about the Sky move on the news. Looks like I’ll be waiting for HDTV and 10MB/s internet for a while longer.

I am feeling a bit sympathetic for Richard Branson, he’s having a really bad week – first this and then the train crash in Cumbria. He looked visibly shaken in the interview at the crash site. Perhaps thats the difference between him an Rupert. Richard gives a damn.

If not now, then when

The time is right for the rest of hell to freeze.

In my considered opinion, now would be the right time to open MacOS X to those Johnny PC users.

Look at the timing:

  • Vista’s bad press means that Microsoft are on the back foot. The general opinion is that Vista is a bad copy of Tiger.
  • People generally love Mac OS, there are loads of switch stories knocking around at the moment.
  • Anyone with an ounce of technical ability (and legal ambivalence) have the ability to run the OS X on their PC anyway, the  work is mostly done already by a small bunch of talented hackers.
  • Leopard is just around the corner, what an ideal opportunity to drop the bomb.

Time to think outside owning the box, license the OS, publicly become a software company.
